The St. Lucie Mets got another great start from top-prospect Robert Whalen, and Bobby Parnell added his first scoreless inning in over a month, as they evened the series in Dunedin. Whalen has been very consistent so far in his introduction to the FSL, with extreme groundball tendencies (58% groundball rate on batted balls), and continued to have success that way Friday night. After Parnell made it through a scoreless inning Indy league import Josh Smoker came in for the final two innings to pick up his first save with St. Lucie, consistently hitting 95-96 MPH with his fastball.
Michael Conforto has slowed down his homerun pace in May, but the PSL Mets announcer has called several doubles off the wall over the past few weeks, possibly knocked down by wind coming in from RF at Tradition Field. The wind was blowing out to RF last night in Dunedin (10 MPH out to RF at first pitch), but Conforto could still only hit the ball off the wall for a double in the 1st inning, because he hit his double off of the LF wall. I cannot wait for the silly numbers he puts up with Las Vegas, assuming he spends much time there.
The Mets scored two runs in the top of the 3rd without picking up hit, thanks to three walks and two wild pitches.
Whalen would walk the first Dunedin batter of the game, and didn’t work a 1-2-3 inning until the 5th, but he never allowed more than one base runner to reach in an inning. He allowed a leadoff double to Dickie Joe Thon in the 3rd, and then retired the next three batters on groundouts, with DJT coming home to score to make it a 2-1 game. He would leave after allowing a two out single in the 6th.
The Mets added an insurance run in the top of the 7th inning on three singles and a wild pitch. Amed Rosario led off with a single lined up the middle, and then went to 3B on a single from Yeixon Ruiz. Rosario would come home on a groundout from Adrian Abreu, giving the Mets a 3-1 lead. Champ Stuart followed with a single, which put runners on the corners for Phil Evns, but he would ground into an inning ending double play.
Parnell worked around a one out walk in the 7th, you can check out full details below. He and Vic Black left for Binghamton after the game to join up with the B-Mets. Have patience with Parnell, because he may still have some set backs before returning to the Mets.
The series between these two continues Saturday night at 6:30 PM, with Kevin McGowan scheduled to pitch for St. Lucie. The Mets top-3B prospect Jhoan Urena had to leave the game in the middle of his first AB, right after popping a foul ball down the RF line.
