Mets 2015 Draft: 4th Round Pick (#119) David Thompson

David Thompson

RHB, 3B, University of Miami

Perfect Game Profile

Running Speed: 45/50
Arm Strength: 60/65
Hitting for Average: 50/60
Hitting for Power: 55/65
Fielding: 55/60

John Sickels had him at the top of his list of College Third Baseman to Watch
Junior, hits right, mashed to tune of .333/.445/.658 with 19 homers, 43/27 BB/K in 243 at-bats. Huge power to all fields, good strike zone judgment, good track record with wooden bats. This is a first-round bat but shoulder injuries have hampered his throwing and many scouts believe he’ll have to move to first base. He’s not a butcher, however, and in my opinion people are under-rating him. Target Territory: Compensation round/second round, although personally I’d consider him in the second half of the first round.

Astro reaction

I can't believe this guy fell to the Mets in the fourth round, especially after reading Sickels report on him. He had a serious surgery, but appears to have recovered from it nicely, as he was a homerun machine for Miami this year, and power can be a concern post-surgery for Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (see Jayce Boyd, although his situation may be different). Right-handed game power is nice, which is why I like this pick, but let's see how it translates to the minors, and if he can handle a position other than 1B (although maybe his power plays even there).
