Recap

It took two days, but the B-Mets won the opener against New Britain behind some strong pitching and a big 6th inning. Mother nature interfered with two very strong pitching performances Friday night, as Michael Fulmer was off to his best start in AA, and Cats starter Shane Carle held Binghamton hitless over the first 3 innings. But as frustrating as it was to have to cut short Fulmer’s start, the B-Mets definitely benefited from getting to the Cats bullpen early, jumping out for 2 runs as soon as the game resumed, and then 5 in the 6th (see below for scoring details and highlights). Matt Koch took over for Fulmer on Saturday in the 5th and was very sharp, as he generally has been for short bursts out of the pen. Koch does not need to be a one-inning guy, but he’s better suited for relatively shorter bursts out of the pen than going through a lineup multiple times to start the game – I guess you could say that about a lot of guys, but Koch is making it work in AA. Adam Kolarek finished the last two innings and was wildly effective with a big lead. The ¾ arm-slot magic appears to have worn off with Kolarek as the league adjusted to him.
The series continued 45 minutes after this game finished, with Robert Gsellman making his 3rd AA start.

Scoring Highlights

The rain ended Michael Fulmer’s best start to date early, but the B-Mets were being no-hit through 3 innings Friday, so they definitely benefitted from it too. Jared King would reach on a throwing error by the Cats shortstop, and then L.J. Mazzilli followed with a single. A Conforto groundout would advance both runners, and then Brock Peterson doubled them home for a 2-0 lead.

Mazzilli got the 6th inning rally started with a double. Michael Conforto would advance him to 3B on a single to RF, and then Peterson walked to load the bases. Josh Rodriguez would clear the bases with a double, which made it a 5-1 game. Dustin Lawley added an RBI double in the frame, and then scored on a single off the bat of Eudy Pina.
