The 51s scored a run in each of the last frames, turning a 4-3 deficit into a 5-4 win over El Paso in extras. Logan Verrett had a long 2nd inning, and was on a pitch count as he stretches back out to the starters role, so he had to leave after allowing a bomb (to rehabbing Wil Myers) and a walk with two outs in the 5th. The 51s were down 4-1 when Verrett left, but they’d scratch out the final 4 runs of the game, and now have a chance to win the 4-game series Tuesday afternoon.
Verrett would allow a leadoff double to Brett Wallace in the 2nd, and he’d move to 3B on a passed ball from d’Arnaud. After a sac fly scored Wallace, Mike McCoy singled home the second run of the innings, but he’d be thrown out trying to advance to 2B on the play.
Verrett settled down for his second 1-2-3 inning in the 3rd, but another leadoff double burned him in the 4th, as Casey McElroy would pick up an RBI single to make it a 3-0 game.
After picking up the only hit the first time through the order, Matt Reynolds continued his big night in the 4th with a one out double down into LF. Reynolds would score on a two out single from Johnny Monell, and Alex Castellanos followed with a big double to LF, but Monell somehow did not score on the play.
After Scott Rice bailed Verrett out of the 5th, Cody Satterwhite came in and shut things down with two great innings, retiring 6 straight after Wallace hit a double off of him to begin his night. Vic Black also had to work around a double during his scoreless inning, but he’d strikeout the final two of the frame (see below for more on Black’s appearance).
Reynolds would double and score again in the 8th, giving him 21 doubles for the season, which is tied for most in the league. Travis Taijeron hit his third homerun in two games leading off the 9th to tie it. After a perfect top of the 10th from John Church, the first two Las Vegas batters reached in the bottom of the 10th – single from Reynolds, doubled to 3B by d’Arnaud. El Paso would load the bases for Alex Castellanos, and then set up their infield with 5 fielders, but Castellanos struck out for the first out of the frame. Daniel McCutchen then fell behind 3-0 on Brandon Allen, before working it back to a 3-2 count. With the game on the line, in the type of situation you dream about as a kid, Allen took ball 4 to give the 51s a walk off walk.
The series wraps up Tuesday afternoon at 3:05 PM, with Darin Gorski scheduled to pitch for the 51s.
