Recapish

Merandy Gonzalez’s ridiculous streak of scoreless innings to start the 2017 season was pushed to 28.1 inning Wednesday afternoon, as Merandy took a shutout into the 8th inning for the second time in just four starts this season. The Fireflies offense also broke out of their home stand slump (just in time to go back on the road), providing Gonzalez with more than enough offensive support for his fourth straight victory.

Recapish

The Las Vegas 51s overcame a big early deficit to scratch out a close win over Sacramento Monday night. The defense faltered behind Tyler Pill with two outs in the 2nd, which allowed things to snowball temporarily, but Pill bounced back to turn in 4 more scoreless frames after falling behind 5-0. A River Cats error helped keep the 51s 5th alive long enough for them to come back and tie the game at 5. Catcher Xorge Carrillo homered leading off that frame and would play an even bigger role later in this one. Check out his highlights and more in the full recap below.

Jordan Humphreys set a Fireflies franchise record with 12 strikeouts Monday night, and Columbia held on for a 3-2 win in their opener with the Asheville Tourists. Humphreys finished with 23 swinging strikes induced on the night, or, in other words, 45% of the swings against Humphreys by Tourists batters got nothing but air. The impressive performance improved Humphreys to 4-0 with a 1.42 ERA through his first four starts of the season. He also has 34 strikeouts (leads the SAL) against just 3 walks and 15 hits allowed over 25.1 innings pitched (innings count also leads the SAL).

Recapish

Making his first appearance with the Las Vegas 51s of the 2017 season, Rafael Montero tossed maybe his best PCL outing since 2014. Working with a limited pitch count, Montero struck out 7 over 5 scoreless innings while allowing just a pair of hits. The 51s jumped out to a 4-0 lead behind him, but the Las Vegas pen slowly let the lead drip away. Amed Rosario knocked the game into extras with a huge RBI triple in the 9th, but Sacramento took advantage of a Matt Reynolds fielding error in the 10th to walk off with a win – it was his second error of the game. Manager Pedro Lopez was tossed arguing a safe/out call in the 8th.
