Recapish

Jordan Humphreys set a Fireflies franchise record with 12 strikeouts Monday night, and Columbia held on for a 3-2 win in their opener with the Asheville Tourists. Humphreys finished with 23 swinging strikes induced on the night, or, in other words, 45% of the swings against Humphreys by Tourists batters got nothing but air. The impressive performance improved Humphreys to 4-0 with a 1.42 ERA through his first four starts of the season. He also has 34 strikeouts (leads the SAL) against just 3 walks and 15 hits allowed over 25.1 innings pitched (innings count also leads the SAL).
Humphreys started his huge night with a strikeout of Manuel Melendez in the 1st.

Asheville was able to scratch out a run in the 1st, but Humphreys bounced back and finished the frame with a strikeout of Joel Diaz.

Tyler Nevin got the Asheville 2nd inning started as Humphreys third victim of the night.

Reed Gamache sparked the Fireflies 2nd inning rally with a two out single. He advanced to 3B on Ali Sanchez’s hit and then came home on a throwing error by Asheville starter Riley Pint – the #4 pick in last years draft. Gene Cone followed and put the Fireflies in the lead with a single into CF.

Humphreys struck out the side for the only time in the 3rd inning:
Max George went down first.

Melendez went down swinging this time.

Finally, Jose Gomez, who had tripled off of Humphreys in the 1st, went down swinging for strikeout number six.

Humphreys made it seven straight set down with a perfect 4th inning, and he added two more strikeouts in the frame:
Vince Fernandez went down swinging to start the frame.

Tyler Nevin went down swinging to end the frame.

The streak ended at nine straight when Jacob Bosiokovic hit a two out double in the 5th. Humphreys also walked his second batter of the game in the frame, but induced three groundouts to keep Asheville off the board.

Gomez struck back against Humphreys to start the Tourists 6th inning, leading the frame off with a double and eventually stealing 3B, but Humphreys quickly set the next two down looking:
Fernandez went down swinging for the first out.

Diaz went down swinging for the second out.

The only batter to reach against Asheville reliever Ty Culbreth was Tim Tebow, when he was hit by a pitch. Culbreth had Tebow picked off at 1B, but his throw sailed into RF, and Tebow was able to advance to 3B on the error. He then came home on a sac fly for the key insurance run.

The 7th inning started with a repeat performance for Asheville, with Willie Abreu providing the double before two more Humphreys strikeouts:
Bosiokovic went down looking for the first out.

George went down looking for Humphreys final out.

Unfortunately, he had reached (or was too close to) his pitch limit for the night, and wasn’t given a chance to clear the 7th inning jam. Taylor Henry allowed Abreu to come around and score, which made it a 3-2 game, before recording the third out of the frame. Henry worked a scoreless 8th before handing the ball off to Adonis Uceta for the 9th. Uceta started the frame with a strikeout of Bosiokovic, and would work around a walk to pick up his second save of the year.

These two teams continue their series Tuesday morning at 11:05 AM, with Gabriel Llanes (0-2, 4.86 ERA) scheduled to start for the Fireflies.
