For the seventh time this season, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies split the first two games of a three game series with their Eastern League opponent, and for the sixth straight time, the Rumble Ponies came out on top in the rubber match. Ponies starter P.J. Conlon wasn’t at his best, but he battled through 6 innings while David Thompson led a charged Binghamton offense, and then the Ponies pen shut Altoona down for the final 3.
Conlon allowed a season high ten hits Thursday morning, with his only perfect inning coming in the 1st. Paraphrasing Binghamton announcer Tim Heiman, “We’ve seen Conlon at his best a few times this year, we’ve seen him at his worst a few times, but this was the first time we saw him somewhere in between.” He gave up some loud contact, but he had a 5-2 lead with 0 walks issued when the 6th inning started. I think his pitch count was reasonable (mid-60’s), but the MiLB gameday for this game crashed during the game and is unlikely to be posted – because of this, I’m not sure if the pitch info they showed was accurate.
The Curve struck first in this game, scratching out a run against Conlon in the 2nd. Jordan Luplow, who homered at the end of Wednesday’s game, was hit with one out and then came around to score on back-to-back singles. The frame might’ve been worse, but Tomas Nido picked a runner off at second base for the second out.

The Ponies were quick to respond, getting that run back and then some before an out was recorded in their half of the 2nd. Matt Oberste led off the inning with a single and David Thompson provided the big hit when he went oppo taco to make it 3-1 two batters later. L.J. Mazzilli also singled in the frame, but the next three Binghamton batters went down quietly.

Conlon allowed a leadoff double to the Altoona pitcher in the 3rd, but would strand two runners in scoring position during the frame. He allowed another leadoff hit in the 4th, when Luplow took him deep for his eighth homer of the year. Conlon responded with strikeouts against two of the next three batters.
Starting with the 4th, Binghamton scored a run in each inning they came to the plate. Kevin Kaczmarski and Thompson led off the 4th with singles, but Kacz would be caught trying to steal third in the frame. This left Thompson at third base with Conlon up and he kept the inning alive with his first hit as a pro (in his second AB as a pro). After a Champ Suart walk loaded the bases, Luis Guillorme came through with his only hit of the game to make it 4-2.

Oberste hit a one out double in the 5th and then came around to score on Thompson’s third hit of the game.

Conlon’s 6th inning started with a homer allowed off the bat of Edwin Espinal, and then things got tough. He did get Luplow to groundout, but then Altoona went single, walk, pop out, single, and finally two run single. The rally might’ve continued, but Connor Joe was thrown out at home on the last hit after Elvis Escobar had been caught between first and second base.

Mazzilli led off the Bingo half of the 6th with a triple, putting pressure on Altoona right after they had tied it. Manager Luis Rojas chose that time to send in pinch-hitter Cody Decker, and he came through with an RBI single to LF, putting Bingo back on top 6-5.

Luis Mateo was the first out of the pen and he created some two out trouble for himself by hitting one batter and walking another to load the bases, but he escaped it with a strikeout of Jerrick Suiter.
In the Bingo 7th, Tomas Nido’s sixth double of the year opened the door for an insurance run. Kevin Taylor followed with a single to advance Nido to third base, and then Kacz brought him home with a sac fly to RF.

Lefty Ben Griset was called on for the 8th, and Altoona got a runner to third base against him, but he retired the final two in a row to strand him there.
Mazzilli worked a leadoff walk in the 8th and came around to score on an Altoona error, which made it an 8-5 game.
With Alberto Baldonado in Las Vegas, Corey Taylor was given the save opportunity again. He hit the leadoff batter, but then retired the next three in a row to close out a victory and a series win for the Rumble Ponies.
With this series in the books, Binghamton is off to Bowie for a weekend series. Bowie has listed, but when I went to preview the camera feeds from previous games in Bowie, there was no video, which is what I remember from the past few seasons (I just figured they had added it by now). Assuming that’s the case, I won’t be recapping Binghamton until they head to Richmond, which appeared to have excellent coverage when I previewed the feed. Donovan Hand is expected to start the opener in Bowie, which is scheduled for Friday night at 7:05 PM.
