Recapish

The Las Vegas 51s came out on the wrong end of a back-and-forth affair in Salt Lake Monday Night, taking a 7-6 loss to the Bees in the series opener. Sean Gilmartin started for the 51s and had a 3-0 lead after three innings, but the Bees would get to him for six runs over the next two frames as they knocked him out early. Las Vegas would tie the game up again in the 7th, but Salt Lake took the lead right back in their half thanks to a little two out rally.
Dominic Smith picked up the games first hit when he singled in the 1st, but the 51s did nothing else in the frame. Amed Rosario with a nice effort in the second GIF below, but the runner was too fast for him.

Not an out from Rosario but still

Travis Taijeron led off the 2nd with a solo blast as the 51s jumped out to a 3-0 lead during the inning. Desmond Jennings followed with a solo blast of his own two batters later, and then the 51s had to string together some hits for a run. Gavin Cecchini singled and ended up on third after a pair of walks loaded the bases for Amed Rosario. Rosario came through with an RBI single to LF, but Phillip Evans was thrown out trying to score on the play, which proved important later in the game.

Cecchini committed a fielding error in the 2nd inning but Gilmartin was able to work around it. Phillip Evans made a nice play on a sac bunt in the frame.

Nimmo in CF

Brandon Nimmo connected on a double with two outs in the 51s 4th, but it led to nothing.

Gilmartin struck out three in the Salt Lake half of the 4th, but faced four other batters in the frame, and they all came around to score. Tony Sanchez singled home a run with two outs in the frame, but it was Matt Williams three run homer that did the real damage.
The 51s were quick to jump back ahead in the next frame. Kevin Plawecki singled and then came around to score two batters later on Josh Rodriguez’s sixth homer of the season.

However, that lead did not last long either, as the Bees put together another little two out rally in the 5th. Ray Navarro worked a walk to keep the inning alive, scored on a Cesar Puello double, and then Dustin Ackley singled home Puello to make it a 6-5 game.
Las Vegas had a great chance to more than just tie the game in the 7th, but a groundball double play limited them to just one run. Amed Rosario took a leadoff walk, went to third on Smith’s second hit of the game, and then scored on the double play grounder.

Smith

The missed opportunity burned them when the Bees pulled one last two out rally out of their hat. Navarro doubled off Erik Goeddel with two outs in the inning, and Puello singled him home to give Salt Lake their decisive 7-6 lead.

Alberto Baldonado wrapped things up on the mound for the 51s, but they would go down quietly at the plate over the final two frames.

After a loss in the opener, these two teams will meet again with an interesting pitching matchup set for Tuesday night. Former Major Leaguer Doug Fister (who is someone a lot of Mets fans have called for the Mets to sign this year) faces off against Rafael Montero (who needs no introduction to Mets fans) with game time set for 9:05 PM.
