Fireflies Series in Review: vs. Green Jackets

Augusta Green Jackets @ Columbia Fireflies

April 6-9, 2017

Below is a breakdown of the Columbia Fireflies opening series from 2017, which was a sweep of the Augusta Green Jackets. The goal with these ‘Series in Review’ posts wasn’t to cover the series as fully as I normally would but to highlight a few players who didn’t get as much coverage throughout the rest of the season.

Series in Review

The Fireflies started 2017 with a bang in front of 8,412 fans, as they exploded for a 14-7 win over Augusta. Tim Tebow went deep in his first AB and everything seemed to go right except Harol Gonzalez’s 4th inning, which is when Augusta scored five of their runs. In total, five players finished with multi-hit games, and both Dash Winningham and Michael Paez joined Tebow with homeruns in the win. Max Kuhns stumbled a little in the 7th, but overall the pen finished with 9 strikeouts in 6 innings, which was a sign of the success to come.

Game one was lopsided, but at least Augusta showed up. Game two was a dominating 7-0 win for Columbia and the star was Jordan Humphreys, who struck out nine in his first of many great starts for the Fireflies. The Cola pitching staff combined for 13 strikeouts total and allowed just 3 singles. Meanwhile, the Fireflies offense kept glowing in the outburst. They scored 7 runs without the aid of a homerun thanks to 11 hits and 8 walks drawn. Jacob Zanon led the way with 3 hits – including a triple – a walk, and two stolen bases.

The Green Jackets showed a little more life in game three, but the Fireflies put the game away early, jumping out to an 8-2 lead after the 3rd. Gabriel Llanes’ struggles with command forced him out before the 5th, so Taylor Henry and Adonis Uceta combined on the final 4.2 IP. The Fireflies scored 9 runs on 9 hits and 9 walks drawn in game 3, with an Anthony Dimino double representing the only Cola extra base hit of the game. Everyone reached base at least once – 7 different players had a hit and 7 different players worked a walk – and 8 of 9 batters either scored or drove in a run.

The Fireflies wrapped up the sweep with another 3-hit shutout behind Merandy Gonzalez – interesting that Merandy G and Jordan Humphreys started the years with such similar outings. Anthony Dimino led the way on offense with 3 hits, and the Cola lineup worked 6 more walks against Augusta pitching. Tim Tebow provided some nice insurance when he connected on his second homer of the year to double the lead in the 5th.
