Recapish

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies completed a four-game sweep of Erie Thursday thanks to a balanced offensive attack and eight strong innings from starter Casey Delgado. Luis Guillorme, Matt Oberste, and L.J. Mazzilli each contributed three hits to lead the way offensively. Meanwhile, Delgado limited the Sea Wolves to three runs on five hits over his eight innings of work, and left with his pitch count at just 86. He probably could’ve worked the 9th, but Rumbletown Manager Luis Rojas chose to give a save opportunity to Adonis Uceta, and Uceta came through for his first Double-A save.
Rumble Ponies starter Casey Delgado has actually been mostly effective since early May, but he’s been at his Double-A best since a rough outing on 7/22. In seven appearances since – five starts, one long piggyback outing and one shorter piggyback outing – Delgado has posted a 2.37 ERA over 38 IP (30 H, 23 K: 11 BB, 149 BF, .598 OPS allowed).
Delgado started his outing by facing the minimum in the 1st, which he repeated three more times over the next seven innings. While the Ponies were building an early 6-0 lead, Delgado was allowing just two base runners over the first five innings.

Luis Guillorme started the Ponies 1st with a single, but he never advanced beyond first base.

Matt Oberste also led off an inning with a single for his first hit of the night, and then the Ponies rallied for a 2-0 lead in the 2nd. David Thompson and L.J. Mazzilli followed with singles to get Oberste home, and then Thompson came home on a Champ Stuart sac fly.

The Ponies biggest rally came in the 4th and it started with another leadoff single from Oberste. Mazzilli singled Oberste to second two batters later and Champ singled him home two batters after that. Binghamton then pulled off a double-steal with Guillorme at the dish, which put both runners in a position to score on Guillorme’s infield hit – gotta love the 80-speed from Champ Stuart.

The Ponies capped their scoring with a pair of doubles for a run in the 5th. Peter Alonso stroked the first double and then Oberste doubled him home two batters later.

The Sea Wolves finally put multiple runners on against Delgado in the same inning during the 6th – the only frame they would do so on this night – although it took a wild pitch on a strikeout to get the first runner on. Logan Watkins followed with a single and then Mike Gerber took Delgado deep to cut the Ponies lead in half.

The Binghamton bats went quiet against Erie’s pen after the 5th and they managed just two hits the rest of the way: Luis Guillorme singled in the 6th and L.J. Mazzilli singled in the 8th.

Fortunately for the Binghamton faithful, the lead was safe in Delgado’s hands through the 8th, and then Adonis Uceta held on in the 9th.

Looking ahead, the Ponies have three home games against Hartford left to prepare for a postseason battle with the first-place Trenton Thunder.
